AROUND THE WORLD in 27 countries, on October 2nd, 2008, The Mirca Art Group, an international coalition of professional artists, announced the public availability of the group'˙s landmark collaborative book, Freedom & Art. The book features 74 works of art, each accompanied by a short statement about the synergy of freedom and art in our world. Freedom & Art is being sold to raise funds in support of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a key political figure who has been under house arrest in Myanmar (formerly Burma) for the past 19 years over her bid for political freedom for her country. She was the legally elected leader of her country in 1990, but the military Junta has refused to recognize the election results and Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi remains under house arrest.

"FREEDOM & ART" was released to the public on Mahatma Gandhi'˙s Birthday, October 2nd. On this day, Mirca Art Group members did a day event called "Set a Book Free". All artists featured in the book  placed a copy in a public location in 27 different countries as coordinated art happening.

Freedom & Art was designed and published using Blurb, the creative book publishing platform. All copies of the book for this event, promotion and exhibitions were donated by Blurb. We thank them for their support of this project.

freedomartcardfront.JPG PANEL DISCUSSION AND ART EXHIBIT IN SUPPORT OF AUNG SAN SUU KYI AND AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

This event has received coverage on BBC and Radio Free Asia in interviews of Freedom & Art panelist Nay Tin Myint who was a prisoner of conscience in Burma for 15 years, 7 of which were in solitary confinement.

On Valentines Day The World Descended On Beacon In Support Of Human Rights For Burma.

On Valentines Day the world descended on Beacon, NY in support of the plight of Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma. Beacon received them with a generous and open heart.

Mount Beacon Fine Art Gallery was the scene of an extraordinary event this past weekend where International Artists of Mirca Art Group and Burma experts joined forces in hosting a panel discussion and art exhibit in support of Nobel Peace Prize winner Daw Aung San Suu kyi to raise funds for Amnesty International in their efforts to fight for Human Rights and the release of thousands of Burmese prisoners of conscience.

The panel discussion was an incredibly emotional and personal experience for all who attended. The 15 International artists and 5 panelist in attendance gave of themselves through the telling of personal experiences such as that of panelist Nay Tin Myint's story of serving 15 years in Burmese prisons beaten and tortured every day, 7 years of which were in solitary confinement as a prisoner of conscience. Another panelist Stacie Freudenberg shared images covering the story of the refugees living in deplorable conditions in Thailand after escaping from Burma. Another emotional moment was the reading of a poem by panelist and documentary film maker Jeffrey Karl Hellman that told the story of becoming an activist through the example of a Burmese ex patriots fight for human rights and dignity and freedom for his country. Many questions were answered by the panelists including what could the average person do to help. Many answers were given but all were in agreement that finding groups like Amnesty International www.amnestyusa.org and US Campaign for Burma http://uscampaignforburma.org were good places to start.

All of the panelists and all 54 international artists in the exhibit donated their time, talent, words and efforts completely to this event. Proceeds from the sale of the book for the project FREEDOM & ART and a percentage of the sale of the art for the exhibit were donated to Amnesty USA. In the spirit of this generosity, many of the fantastic restaurants lining Main Street in Beacon, NY donated food platters for the event a well as wine. Poppy’s, Brother’s Trattoria, Sukhothai, Leon’s Café and Grill, The Cup and Saucer, Beacon Falls Café, El Burrito, Homespun Foods, the Artisan Wine Shop, Max’s on Main St. and the Yankee Clipper Diner. Likewise the panelists and the artists from around the world felt a warm welcome as they realized that restaurants around the city had contributed to make the reception superb. Even the books were donated by self publishing site Blurb allowing for the full cost of the books to be donated to Amnesty International.

Even though the panel discussion is finished, the exhibit remains up until March 10th. If you still wish to make a donation to Amnesty International, there are plenty of great art works and books available in Mount Beacon Fine Art 155 Main Street, Beacon, NY. If you can't make it to the gallery but wish to purchase a book, please visit the online bookstore at www,amnestyusa.org and Blurbhttp://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/367936 were proceeds will still be donated to Amnesty International.

Mirca Art Group wishes to thank Eileen McTiernan of Mount Beacon Fine Art for giving our project a home and the businesses of Beacon for their incredible generosity even in these economically challenging times for a successful event in support of Burma and Aund San Suu Kyi.

Below the Surface – The mixed-media art of Carol Flaitz and Carla Goldberg

Tuesday, October 27, 2009
By AiO Staff
DSC02440.JPGCarol Flaitz and Carla Goldberg are innovative contemporary artists united by a common aesthetic sensibility and social perspective. Besides a similar creative philosophy, they share a profound concern for the use of art in the improvement of the human experience. Earlier this year the two artists were responsible for coordinating the Freedom and Art International Exhibition at the Mount Beacon Fine Art Gallery, designed to raise awareness of the imprisonment of the Burmese political activist and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

The dynamic work of these artists is complementary both emotionally and formally. Both use abstraction to create work in mixed media, Flaitz inspired by nano-photography–examination of the tiny computer chips that drive modern computer technology–and Goldberg by the infinite flow and spirit of the Hudson River. The textured work of both artists is vibrant in composition and richly tactile in surface.

“Below the Surface” also features selected international artwork from the book entitled Freedom and Art, a collaborative effort by 74 artists from 27 countries on six continents published to make a philosophical statement. Proceeds from the sale of the book, which will be available at the exhibition, are being donated to Amnesty International on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi. The paintings selected for the exhibition from this elegant volume include work from artists in Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Libya, and South Africa.

The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception at the Karpeles Museum on Saturday, November 7, from 12 to 4 p.m.

The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is located at 94 Broadway, across from City Hall, in the City of Newburgh. The Karpeles Museums are a national chain with nine in the U.S., specializing in the preservation and display of original, historically significant documents and manuscripts. Museum Hours: Thu.-Sat., 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.

Admission is always free.
