INSIGHT GALLERY SHOW No. 4 opens Sept 26th, 2009
September 21, 2009
Insight Gallery, located at 71 Main Street in Cold Spring, is having an art opening for its fourth show on Saturday, September 26th from 4 to 7 pm, the same day as the 32nd annual Cold Spring Harvest Festival. View the work of Hudson Valley artists Lisa Zukowski and Julie Tooth. Stop by, have a glass of wine, and listen to ukelele music by The EduKated Fleas.
Lisa Zukowski’s paintings, prints and mixed media sculpture utilize both traditional and experimental methods. Zukowski received her degree in painting and printmaking from Brooklyn College, where she served as printer for the Brooklyn College Press. She has worked as a textile colorist, studio assistant, and graphic artist. Lisa’s work has been exhibited in the United States, abroad, and in several private collections. Zukowski was born in Brooklyn and currently resides in Warwick, New York. Zukowski’s work can be viewed at Good Question Gallery in Milford, Pa., Beacon Artist Union in Beacon, NY, Beacon Art – Shortwave Gallery in Stone Harbor, NJ and on the web at www.lisaz.com. About her work, Zukowski says, “In my work, I attempt to communicate my perception of my environment. I bring together the physical and experiential and express them in symbolic and personal abstract imagery. I am drawn to the essential geometry of the landscape reducing the subject to its basic forms while at the same time expressing the emotional effect the space holds for me.” Visit Zukowski’s website lisaz.com to see her work.
Julie Tooth's paintings are complex. The paintings are not reductive but conspicuously additive by drawing attention to the endless intellectual and emotional possibilities available. Originally from Irvington NY, Tooth lived in New York City for nearly twenty years. During that time she took advantage of a variety of art schools, attending Cooper Union, Parsons, New York Academy of Art, and NYU. She studied the figure, landscape, and still life. Tooth worked exclusively in watercolors for five years before moving onto printmaking and eventually acrylic on canvas, which is her current medium. Tooth explains, “The objective of my work is to always simplify, whether the painting is about a particular subject or is purely abstract. My recent work is about trying to say something with less, to evoke feeling with less.” Tooth now lives in the Hudson Valley. Her work can be seen at julietooth.com or by appointment at 917-881-3404.
The EduKated Fleas are made up of duet Greg Doyle and Wendy Matthews. They play the big hits, favoring swing and vintage tunes. The Fleas feature both Doyle and Matthews on vocals, often in harmony. Doyle, on baritone uke, is a guitarist whose musical interests span Swing to Surf and beyond. He has been playing guitar since his teens and teaches uke and guitar privately. Matthews, on soprano uke, was charmed by the instrument’s portability and quirkiness and took it up a few years back as an accompaniment to her singing. In a previous life, she was a member of Bad Attitudes, a four-woman music and comedy troupe. The Fleas have delighted audiences in venues as varied as the Clearwater Festival, Hoot on the Hudson, Ukulele Cabaret, and the New York Ukulele Festival. You can hear more of their music at edukatedfleas.com.
